This original canvas was inspired by a post I read on the Instagram post of WWF about emperor penguins, a species now seriously threatened by climate change and the melting of Antarctic sea ice. You might not know that emperor penguins depend on stable sea ice to breed and raise their chicks. Rising temperatures are causing the ice to disappear earlier every year. According to WWF, if global warming continues at the current pace, the species could face a dramatic population decline by the end of the century. This news shocked me… At the moment, I felt like sketching these animals, and eventually, I finished with the small canvas.
The artwork is created using a combination of collage and oil pastels, giving it visible textures and layered details while keeping the penguins at the centre of the composition.
